The Cross…According to Jesus

This is a free thirty-day devotional built around a simple but often overlooked conviction: Jesus interpreted his own death. Before the crucifixion, during it, and after it, he spoke about what he came to do and why. Across all four Gospels, in his own words, he named the necessity of the cross, explained what it would accomplish, and invited his followers to understand it with him. Those words are the foundation of this devotional.

Most teaching about the cross begins with Paul, or Hebrews, or the theological tradition that followed. This devotional begins earlier — with Jesus himself. Each day’s reading follows his words in chronological order, from his earliest references to his coming death all the way through the crucifixion. No commentary replaces what he said. The aim is simply to listen to the one who, more than anyone else, knew what the cross meant.
